Third International
Workshop on Advances in the Use of Historical Marine Climate Data (MARCDAT-III)

The Workshop is being organized jointly by the WMO/IOC Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) and European Space Agency (ESA), and sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), and by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), Climate Variability and Predictability Project (CLIVAR) and Ocean Observations Panel for Climate (OOPC). The ICOADS project also provides some support.

Background

The Third International Workshop on Advances in the Use of Historical Marine Climate Data (MARCDAT-III) will be held at ESRIN, known as the European Space Agency (ESA) Center for Earth Observation, in Frascati, Italy (a small town 20km south of Rome), from 2-6 May 2011. This workshop follows international marine workshops in Canada (1999), USA (2002), Belgium (2003), UK (2005) and Poland (2008) where MARCDAT alternates with more formal JCOMM Workshops on Advances in Marine Climatology (CLIMAR). These workshops have brought together a wide spectrum of marine data users, and managers of marine data and products, and have included an underlying focus on the continuing evaluation, utilization, and improvement of the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS).
