This file describes the code list files necessary to use the
World Ocean Database 1998 ASCII format. Code file names are
followed by a colon (:) and a brief description of the file
format and contents.

accesion.txt:  list of accession numbers, submitting institutes,
submitting investigator, and date of receipt of data

bioheadr.txt: list of biological header variable names and their
numerical codes.

biomass.txt: code table identifying the total plankton haul 

castdir.txt: code table identifying cast direction

cloudamt.txt: code table identifying the cloud amount (WMO-2700 or
NODC-0052)

cloudtyp.txt: code table identifying the cloud type (WMO-0500 or
NODC-0053)

cntmeth.txt: code table identifying the counting methods for plankton
data

country.txt: NODC country code (a 2-digit alphanumeric code), and the
corresponding country.

datatr.txt: code table identifying data treatment (NODC 0614)

depthdet.txt: code table identifying how upper and lower depths are
determined for biological observations

digitint.txt: code table identifying the digitization interval for MBT
data (NODC 0613)

digitmet.txt: code table identifying the digitization method for MBT
data (NODC 0612)

filter.txt: code table identifying filter codes

flags.txt: list of (1) whole profile variable flag definitions and their
numerical codes; (2) depth value flag definitions and their numerical
codes; (3) observed level value flag definitions and their
numerical codes; and (4) standard level value flag definitions and
their numerical codes.

flowcal.txt:  code table identifying flowmeter calibration methods for
the biological observations

gear.txt: code list identifying biological sampling gear and flowmeter
types

inst.txt: OCL institute codes (integer), NODC institute codes 
(combination of country code and integer), and their corresponding definitions.

itistsn.txt: list of ITIS-compliant taxonomic serial numbers (TSNs),
old NODC codes (from NODC Taxonomic Code Version 8.0 CD-ROM), ranks,
and taxonomic names (sometimes including authority).

methods.txt: list of second header methods for the profile data 
and their numerical codes.

nontaxsn.txt: list of (1) translations of originator's taxa names to
ITIS-compliant names, and their ITIS TSNs (taxonomic serial numbers); 
(2) non-taxonomic names and their serial numbers (all in the range
-5000 to -5999); (3) combinations of taxonomic names and their
serial numbers (all in the range -6000 to -6999); and (4) temporary
serial numbers for taxonomic names not yet added to the ITIS system
(all less than -7000). If a name was issued a temporary serial
number, but was subsequently added to the ITIS system, both the
TSN and the old, temporary serial number are listed.

owscodes.txt: code table identifying the ocean weather stations

varmeas.txt: list of measured variable names and their numerical codes.

pinames.txt: list of principal investigator names and their
numerical codes.

preserv.txt: code table identifying sample preservatives used

projects.txt: NODC project codes and their corresponding definitions.

recorder.txt: code table identifying the recorder type (WMO-4770)

reftype.txt: code table identfying the instrument for reference temperature
(NODC 0615)

seastate.txt: code table identifying the sea state (WMO-3700 or NODC-0109)

secondh.txt: list of second header variable names and their 
numerical codes.

shipname.txt: OCL ship codes (integer), NODC ship codes (combination of
country code and integer), and their corresponding definitions.

taxabund.txt: taxon presence, absence adn relative abundance terms

taxfeatr.txt: code table identifying taxon shapes or other features
(e.g. 'truncate conical')

taxlife.txt:table identifying taxon life stages

taxmodif.txt: code table identifying the taxon modifying terms (e.g. 'sp.')

taxrealm.txt: code table identifying the taxon realm (e.g. 'benthic')

taxsex.txt: code table identifying the taxon sex

taxsize.txt: code table identifying the taxon size delimiters

taxtroph.txt: code table identifying the taxon trophic method

taxvar.txt: list of integrated or taxa-specific variables
and their numerical codes.

towtype.txt: code table identifying the gear towing method

tsprobe.txt: code table identfying the T/S instrument type

units.txt: code table identifying originator's variable units

visibil.txt: code table identifying visibility (WMO-4300)

volumeth.txt: code table identifying volume determination methods

watercol.txt: code table identifying water color (Forel-Ule scale 00-21)
