Characteristics of NCDC Global Telecommunication System (GTS) Data using NCDC and NCEP (NCEP-m) Decoding Methods (plus NCDC/NCEP comparison Appendix)

Note: Also, Appendix A provides limited comparisons between NCDC GTS data and actual NCEP GTS data

Figure 1 and Examples 1 provide comparison results for April 2011 between:

coads_20110505_gts_apr ("NCDC"), and
a reconversion, according to the NCEP method, of the original GTS messages in NCDC attm99 ("NCEP-m").

The software used for NCEP-m is similar to that used for processing NCEP GTS for ICOADS from 1998 until October 1999 (i.e. a period in which we processed the original GTS messages from NCEP rather than utilized the BUFR data converted by NCEP, as has been the case since October 1999). For BUFR validation purposes, however, the software has been modified to mimic the NCEP BUFR processing. The data have been assigned to the following decks:

Figure 1. For each primary data element (ref. IMMA documentation), stacked bars show agreement (blue) vs. disagreement (red) between elements (where missing vs. extant data counts as disagreement); and symbols indicate the total extant level of NCEP-m (+) and NCDC (x) data (thus any displacement between the symbol and the top of the bar represents missing data in one data source; note the total height of the bar extends only to the level at which the element is extant in one and/or the other source).

Introductory explanation of the Examples format: In the bullets preceding each group of IMMA report examples, we have highlighted noteworthy (and what appear to be systematic) patterns of field differences. In the actual IMMA report examples that follow the bullets, the primary field abbreviations are listed vertically (ref. IMMA documentation), and a caret (^) appears below character positions that differ between two example reports. The last line is NCDC attm99 the original GTS message. Quality Control was not done on the reconversion and therefore it lacks data elements II, B10, B1, etc. or computed missing DPT. Report examples are not included below for IC1 through IC5 because they are outside the selected primary fields. Some patterns have been combined in a single example.

ID (identification/call sign) noteworthy differences: deck 792 ID=MASKSTID. Note: All NCEP ship reports (deck 792) are being uniformly remasked by NCEP to "MASKSTID" (and to "X...X" overwriting any real FM 13 callsign information) since December 2007 owing to ship commercial and security concerns.
