Shipboard Environmental (Data) Acquisition System (SEAS)
Comparisons of Release 2.5 input data with deck 874 Shipboard Environmental Acquisition System (SEAS) test data
Figures 1-3 and Examples 1-3 provide 2000-07 duplicate elimination (dupelim) results comparing Release 2.5 (R2.5) input data with a new test file (seas874_test_imma.dat) of deck 874 ship data covering 1991-2010 (435,546 reports). These results reflect "transient" duplicate (dup) matches (as explained below) between deck 874, and real-time (GTS) and delayed-mode ship receipts from these other decks:
- 792 US Natl. Cntrs. for Environ. Pred. (NCEP) BUFR GTS: Ship Data
- 926 International Maritime Meteorological (IMM) Data
- 927 International Marine (US- or foreign-keyed ship data)
First, all deck 874 data from the previous version were removed from the R2.5 input mixture (i.e. containing all available dups) for the same period. There were no exact dups in the test file. Then the new SEAS data were merged with the residual R2.5 input data, and the resulting data mixture was processed through dupelim.
During dupelim processing, all reports are compared with all other reports within a circular buffer, such that a duplicate status (DUPS; ref. Appendix A) flag within each report may be reset (to a higher, but not lower, value) as a result of subsequent matches. "Transient" matches therefore refers to all matches that were made, and DUPS results that may be altered later during this processing. Furthermore, dup matches used for these results are limited to those considered to be of "certain" dup status (i.e. DUPS 8-13).
The most significant SEAS problems identified are that the translated data appear to erroneously contain hour and minutes instead of hour to hundredths, and Examples 1 indicates some possibly erroneous positive web bulb temperatures (i.e. in conjunction with negative dew point temperatures; these examples also reveal an possible GTS coding error in NCEP dew point temperatures of 99.0 spanning at least 2002-06).
Also there were sea surface temperature indicator differences,
wind directions off by 10 in Examples 2-3 and a slight wind speed bias.
Some differences may be the result of quality control in the other decks, for example of
clouds and in deck 792 calm and variable wind directions.
There are more deck 874 wind speed indicators than wind speeds in Figure 1.
Dups involving call sign KRGB were quite dissimilar (see Examples 3 final no pattern example). Figures 1-2 include KRGB dups and may be unduly biased by that call sign, which also represented the most frequent of the overall SEAS data (2.32%).
Figure 3 excludes KRGB dups.
ID (identification/call sign) KRGB included

Figure 1.
For each primary data element (ref. IMMA documentation), stacked bars show agreement (blue) vs. disagreement (red) among transient duplicates (where missing vs. extant data counts as disagreement); and symbols indicate the total extant level of
deck 792 (+) and deck 874 (x)
data (thus any displacement between the symbol and the top of the bar represents missing data in one data source; note the total height of the bar extends only to the level at which the element is extant in one and/or the other source).
Introductory explanation of the Examples format: In the bullets preceding each group of IMMA report examples, we have highlighted noteworthy (and what appear to be systematic) patterns of field differences. The bulleted sentences are generally concluded with percentages (nn%), indicating the percentage of disagreement accounted for by a given data pattern, with respect to the total amount of element disagreement (i.e. red bar), as shown in the corresponding figure (here Figure 1). Read "/" as "or" for when multiple patterns or variants (and associated percentages) were identified. In the actual IMMA report examples that follow the bullets, the primary field abbreviations are listed vertically (ref. IMMA documentation), and the caret (^) appears below character positions that differ between two example reports.
Report examples are not included below for IX or SD2 because they are outside the selected primary fields,
and sometimes not specifically for "no pattern" report examples, although they may appear in other examples. Some patterns have been combined in a single example.
Examples 1. Transient matches between decks 792 vs. 874 (NCEP vs. SEAS).
- DS (ship course) noteworthy differences: deck 792 DS = 1 and deck 874 DS = missing together with
- VS (ship speed) noteworthy differences: deck 792 VS = 1 and deck 874 VS = missing (15%).

- II (ID indicator) noteworthy differences: deck 792 II = 2 - generic ID and deck 874 II = 1 - call sign (95%).
- ID (identification) noteworthy differences: deck 792 ID = MASKSTID/KGJD/MAUMEE and deck 874 ID = any pattern/NRUO/WDA4649 (43%)/(31%)/(11%).
Note: All NCEP ship reports (deck 792) are being uniformly remasked by NCEP to "MASKSTID" since December 2007 owing to ship commercial and security concerns.

Appendix A - Duplicate Elimination Results
Certainty of transient matches was indicated by dup status (DUPS; ref. IMMA documentation) with the following values:
0 unique
1 best duplicate
2 best duplicate with substitution
3 uncertain: uncertain weather element with hour cross'
4 uncertain: uncertain weather element with no cross'
5 uncertain: uncertain weather element with day cross'
6 uncertain: time/space'
7 uncertain: certain weather element with hour cross'
8 certain: certain weather element with no cross
9 certain: uncertain weather element with time/space
10 certain: certain weather element with time/space
11 certain: time/space/id
12 certain: uncertain weather element with time/space/id
13 certain: certain weather element with time/space/id
Where "certain weather element" was contingent on how many of wind speed, visibility, present weather, first past weather, sea level pressure, air temperature, and sea surface temperature were in common, and how many were different.
Allowances which would have permitted some differences to not count were deactivated,
as were hour and day crosses.
Almost all transient matches were DUPS 13, the most certain, and 71% of the DUPS 11 matches had ID of KRGB.
Seven weather elements in common with zero different followed by four in common with zero different were the most frequent matching criteria (Fig. 4).

Figure 4.
Total 2000-07 deck 874 transient matches a) [left] DUPS per deck and b) [right] weather elements in common and different (listed vertically).
Surprisingly the output SEAS data were 96% unique.
Because only 22% were unique for hundredths of hour equal to zero and hundredths never exceeded 59 (Fig. 5),
it appears that minutes were not translated.
Curiously Examples 4 show SEAS data matching NCEP BUFR data in which the attached GTS raw strings did not have a minutes group.

Figure 5.
Total 2000-07 deck 874 DUPS per hundredths of hour.
Examples 4. Hour patterns after sort by call sign.
